The Brooklyn Nets continue to be the most dramatic team in the NBA. Kevin Durant requested a trade on June 30 following a disappointing season which results in a first round playoff loss.

Per Shams Charania of The Athletic, Kevin Durant met with Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai over the weekend, and reiterated his desire to be traded. KD essentially gave Tsai an ultimatum, telling the Nets to choose between him and head coach Steve Nash and general manager Sean Marks, citing a “lack of faith” in the franchise’s direction.

Joe Tsai career so far

Joseph Tsai was born in Taipei, Taiwan, in January 1964, and is the son of a second-generation lawyer. Tsai moved to the US at the age of 13 and eventually enrolled at Yale University where he played on the varsity lacrosse team. He earned a B.A. in economics and East Asian studies.

He later earned a J.D. from Yale Law School and briefly worked as an attorney before switching into private equity and investments.

Tsai would go on to become a co-founder and executive vice chairman of the Chinese multinational technology company Alibaba Group. He became the owner of the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 after initially purchasing a 49% stake in the Nets.

Meet Joe Tsai wife, Clara

Joe Tsai’s wife is Kansas-born Clara Wu Tsai who is the granddaughter of Wu San-lien, the first elected mayor of Taipei City. Wu attended Stanford University, where she studied international relations, and has an MBA degree from Harvard Business School.

Clara worked for American Express and Taobao Hong Kong. She was a founding partner of REFORM Alliance, where she now sits on the board of directors. She is also co-owner of the Nets along with husband Joe.

The couple got married on October 6, 1996 at the Park Avenue Christian Church in New York. According to the New York Times, the ceremony was performed by a Baptist minister. She was reportedly 30 at the time meaning she is 56-years-old in 2022.

The couple have many philanthropic efforts including the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation. According to Nets Daily, she entered into a social justice collaboration with former Nets owner Jay-Z in 2020 and with husband Joe donated $50 million to social justice and economic equality initiatives.

Joe Tsai and his wife have three children, daughter Alex, and sons Dash and Jacob. Alex is Majoring in Computer Science / Management Science and Engineering at Stanford and plays on the lacrosse team.

Joe and Clara Tsai are an extremely wealthy couple. The Tsai’s net worth is believed to be between $8.4-10.5B. Forbes calculate that Joe is the 254th richest person in the world.
