Klay Thompson has been wearing a no.77 jersey in recent practice videos and some fans think he should make the switch permanently.

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson has been participating in full team practice recently ahead of his return.

Thompson hasn’t played in the NBA for two-and-a-half years since tearing his left ACL in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals. He also suffered a right Achilles tear in November 2020, which set his return date back.

The Warriors are 15-2 in the Western Conference and looking like the team to beat. Steph Curry is looking like the clear MVP and, with Thompson’s imminent return, they are the prohibitive favourites for the title.

Thompson has been rehabbing for months and was only cleared for 5-on-5 work last week. He’s been spotted several times at practice. However, one video recently caused confusion.

Klay Thompson was spotted wearing a no. 77 jersey, which is a change from his usual 11.

Has Klay Thompson changed number? No.77 jersey explained

Thompson hasn’t officially changed jersey numbers yet – but there is a reason for the no.77 jersey.

Klay was recently snubbed (at least in his opinion) from the NBA’s recent 75th-anniversary team of the best players ever.

Despite being a three-time champion and five-time All-Star, Klay was left off the list, prompting frustration from the swingman.

Some of Thompson’s teammates hung a no. 77 jersey in his locker to poke fun at him being left off the list.

However, it seems as though Thompson is using it as extra motivation, which is why he’s still rocking the jersey in practice.

Some fans have seriously suggested Klay should switch to the no.77 jersey permanently.

He’s not yet made a decision on the jersey number but it would be pretty cool to see him rock the 77.

When will Klay Thompson return?

The Warriors have been quick to play down talk of a return date, to remove pressure on Klay.

However, late December has been tentatively mentioned as a period when we could see Klay suit up once again.

“It’s so exciting,” Thompson said. “Just to be running up and down the court and playing basketball, it’s truly a blessing and it makes coming to work so easy.

“The work the training staff and I have done over the last two years is really paying off, and it’s hard to put into words how grateful I am to be playing basketball again.”

Steve Kerr was quick to pump the brakes on Klay’s return when asked by reporters recently, saying: “We’re going to be very patient with Klay.”

The league’s about to be in a lot of trouble.
