Charles Barkley roasted the New York Knicks and Kenny Smith after the former’s somewhat outlandish claim about the current state of the tram.

Inside the NBA returned on Monday night with the more familiar cast of Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal.

The crew were covering a slate of NBA games which took place on MLK Day. One of the games the crew covered was the the Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks, who met Monday at Madison Square Garden.

Knicks’ home struggles continue

The game was a thriller was Toronto managed to come away with a 123-121 overtime win. The Knicks were playing on the second night of a back-to-back after winning in Detroit on Sunday.

After the loss the Knicks are five games about .500, good enough for sixth in the Eastern Conference. However, they are now 11-12 at home this season – the only team with a winning record to have a losing record at home.

The Knicks have some All-Star calibre talent in Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson, but it’s apparent they’re missing one or two pieces to really make a splash in the East.

Charles Barkley roasted the Knicks after Kenny Smith’s outlandish claim

On Inside the NBA last night, Kenny Smith, who is from New York, gave his thoughts on the Knickerbockers’ current situaution.

“They’re still about a fifth, sixth seed”, he commented. “They’re probably another piece away from trying to be an elite team”.

It was at that point that Charles interjected, saying they’re a piece away if that piece is LeBron, KD, Giannis, Kareem, Bird. He added that they were a “good little solid team” that “play hard and that’s it.”

He concluded that they’re “not even close”.

New York fans reacted to Charles’ comments

New York fans are clearly loyal to their team, but for many it was hard to disagree with Charles’ comments. Some, however, took it a little more personally and reminded Charles of his playoff record against the Knicks:

Inside the NBA crew’s hilarious penalty kicks

As ever it was a jovial atmosphere in the TNT studio last night, as the crew were joined by Team USA legends Julie Foudy and DaMarcus Beasley.

During EJ’s Neato Stat of the Night segment, the crew all took turns to take penalty kicks with Charles Barkley standing in goal.

They were largely pretty terrible, with Kenny’s technique in particular coming under serious scrutiny. Check out the segment below:
