TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson has criticised Lewis Hamilton in his regular newspaper column, but what exactly did Clarkson say about Hamilton?

What did Jeremy Clarkson say about Lewis Hamilton?

Never one to keep his opinions to himself, former Top Gear presenter Clarkson has written about Hamilton in his column in The Sun.

The TV host took aim at Hamilton’s social justice efforts in recent times, saying fans now preferred his Formula One title rival Max Verstappen.

“People love Max Verstappen but they’ve taken a noisy dislike to Lewis,” Clarkson wrote.

“The problem is that Lewis has changed.

“When he first came on to the scene he was bright and talented and normal – and everyone loved him.”

Hamilton quickly built up a devoted following when he made his F1 debut in 2007.

The Briton often thanks members of ‘Team LH’ post race for their support.

A seven-time world champion, Hamilton is the biggest name in F1.

This in part due to his high-profile celebrity status, especially in the United States.

His attendance at events such as the Met Gala and Paris Fashion week attests to this.

Clarkson unhappy with Hamilton’s social justice efforts

Clarkson’s comments about Hamilton’s push for greater social change did not stop there, however.

The Mercedes driver has been at the forefront of F1’s diversity push, including their We Race As One message pre-race.

Moreover, the 100-time grand prix winner has tried to reduce his carbon footprint amid the climate crisis.

However, Clarkson has described all this as “woke.”

“But then he decided to go woke and right-on and more politically correct than a student union AGM,” the host of Clarkson’s Farm wrote.

“After the murder of George Floyd, he had Mercedes paint the cars black.

“He talks about how he’s now green because he sold his jet and has urged everyone to be vegetarian.

“All this might work well on social media but in the real world, where people live, it doesn’t work at all.

“This is a problem for the green movement.

They get Lewis to be a mouthpiece thinking he’ll convert the rest of us.

“But instead, we all just want to throw something at him.”

Is Clarkson right?

While Clarkson is right that Hamilton was behind Mercedes switching to its black livery in 2020, it was not forced.

Hamilton wished the team to make a statement on Black Lives Matter greater than social media posts.

The team could have said ‘No.’

However, Hamilton has since said he is non-plussed if Mercedes goes back to silver.

“It won’t deter us from the changes we are making internally,” he said earlier this year.

The racing driver has also launched ‘The Hamilton Commission’ to look into increasing diversity in motorsport.

What comes next for Hamilton?

Hamilton finished second to title rival Verstappen in the US Grand Prix last week.

He now trails the Red Bull driver by 12 points in the standings.

There are five grands prix left in the 2021 season with 133 points still up for grabs.
