Why are the Boston Red Sox wearing yellow uniforms tonight?

The Boston Red Sox have been wearing special yellow-and-blue uniforms and jerseys this week as part of Nike’s MLB City Connect series. The uniforms first debuted in 2021 and captured the color scheme of the Boston Marathon.

The marathon-inspired uniform is said to: “Adopt colors that honor the spirit of Patriots’ Day weekend and features ‘Boston’ in a stencil font across the chest paying tribute to the Boylston Street finish line.

“The numbers ‘617′ are highlighted on the left sleeve as a nod to the area code for Boston and Fenway Park. The numbers appear within a racing bib, honoring one of the city’s most iconic annual sports traditions.”

Per Mass Live, manager Alex Cora says the Red Sox will wear the uniforms for all three games against the Tigers so expect to see more of the vibrant yellow.

MLB teams all wore blue recently for Father’s Day

On Father’s Day (19 June), MLB teams and players donned blue wristbands, socks and decals, as well as other apparel, in honor of the holiday. It was done to raise awareness of prostate cancer as well as to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer.

According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF): “Blue is the official color for prostate cancer awareness and MLB players, managers, coaches and on-field personnel will lend their support in solidarity by wearing New Era specially designed caps featuring blue club logos.”

Players and all on-field personnel have worn blue ribbons and sported blue wristbands on Father’s Day since MLB first partnered with the Prostate Cancer Foundation in 1996.
