MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was booed by fans at Game 6 of the 2022 World Series – and it’s not the first time it’s happened.
On Sunday 5, November the Houston Astros won their second World Series title. The Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in Game 6 of the best-of-seven-series to clinch the series 4-2.
Rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña was named the World Series MVP, making him just the third rookie do so. He is also one of just nine player to win both the Championship Series MVP and World Series MVP in the same year.
Fans react to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred being booed during World Series
Before the Astros were officially presented with the World Series trophy, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred received a chorus of boos.
Manfred was booed by the crowd at Minute Maid last night, and fans on Twitter reacted:
Nobody knows why – but it’s become a bit of a theme
Nobody is quite sure why Rob Manfred receives boos at the World Series, but it’s not the first time it’s happened.
During the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series trophy ceremony in 2020, the MLB Commissioner was also showered with boos. As reported by Yahoo Sports! at the time, the boos continued throughout Manfred’s speech, and he looked ‘legitimately stunned’.
Manfred was also booed in 2021 when the Atlanta Braves won their first World Series, as well as his Hall of Fame intro in 2021:
He was also heckled by a fan prior to Game 5
Before Game 5 of this year’s World Series Manfred was also heckled by a fan. The fan, who goes by the Reddit username FIRE_CHIP, posted that he was going to be sitting near Manfred’s box and would yell whatever the top comment was at the commissioner.
As reported by the New York Post, the top comment was: “YOU’LL GET THE YOUTH BY ENDING BLACK OUTS” a reference to MLB.TV preventing local fans watching their area’s team on the league’s subscription service.
