Kyle Schwarber “reached his limit” on Sunday when umpire Angel Hernandez called him out on strikes – Hernandez’ “bad third-strike call” has since spawned several memes, some of which are less than charitable. Here’s what we know about his salary and net worth, plus one or two of the less offensive Angel Hernandez memes to emerge from Sunday’s match.
What are Angel Hernandez’ salary and net worth?
As of 2019, Cuban Major League Baseball umpire Ángel Hernández earned a base salary of $400,000 – that’s according to the Boston Sports Journal.
The outlet adds that, with 30 years of “service time”, that would increase by $30,000, to $430,000.
That doesn’t include umpires’ annual share of MLB’s television deals, apparently worth $30,000 per head. There are also postseason assignments to consider, which can be worth “tens of thousands more”.

So, all told, Hernandez likely earns close to half a million dollars per year. Estimates of his net worth, meanwhile, are few and far between.
That said, one outlet puts Angel Hernandez’ net worth at $22 million. Others place it far lower, for example somewhere between $1 million and $5 million.
MLB fans and pundits react to Hernandez’ ‘bad third-strike call’
Angel Hernandez is no stranger to criticism. He has received plenty of it during his three-decade-long umpiring career.
His Wikipedia page, for example, contains a litany of “incidents” involving several overturned calls. However, it also contains a reference to Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler, who received a fine for $10,000 for saying Hernandez needed “to find another job”.

In the wake of Sunday’s call, and Kyle Schwarber’s subsequent outburst, articles have appeared in the opinion sections of sports journals describing Hernandez as, among other things, “incredible” and “brutal”.
So that we can at least base our opinions on facts, however, here’s a handy infographic showing Hernandez’ overall accuracy during the game.
