Mikko Koivu is a Finnish former professional ice hockey player who recently had his jersey retired by the Minnesota Wild.
It is the first time the franchise has retired a former player’s number and, on Sunday, 13 March, the 39-year-old had his jersey retirement ceremony.

Koivu was drafted sixth overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild and played for the franchise for 15 seasons, 11 of them as captain.
He played 1,028 of his 1,035 regular-season games with the Wild and generated 206 goals and 505 assists during his career. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in franchise history, and on Sunday was honoured by having his number nine jersey retired.

Mikko Koivu’s ex-wife is Helena Koivu, who he was married to for six years. Helena is believed to have roots in Tallinn, Estonia, although she currently lives in Minnesota. Helena is founder and chief executive of Helena Koivu Beauty, which sells clean beauty products.
Mikko and Helena married in 2014 in Finland. Speaking at the time, Mikko said: “It was a fun time for myself and my family and friends. There was a lot of planning. The first half of the summer was a little busier.”
Koivu said although there are a few differences regarding a Finnish wedding, things are pretty much the same as in the US – there’s a church and reception afterwards.
The couple have three children, welcoming a baby girl in 2013. Details of the middle child are not known but they had their third child, a boy named Oscar, in 2018.

The ice hockey star isn’t on Instagram but Helena is, and often shares cute snaps of life with her children.
