Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane deserves to be recognised as one of the best players in the world.

Writing in his weekly column for Sky Sports, the former England midfielder admitted Kane’s unique skillset allows him to stand out.

He feels the 27-year-old’s all-round game makes him different from other great Premier League strikers of the past and present.

Merson said: “(Kane) isn’t far off the best player in the world – and this is the reason.

“You have got players like Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Sergio Aguero, Robbie Fowler, Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand, Jamie Vardy. All top-drawer centre-forwards.

“Harry Kane is one of them.

“And then Harry Kane goes and plays where Kevin De Bruyne plays, where Eric Cantona played, where Dennis Bergkamp played – and he does it just as well.”

Merson: ‘Can’t believe what I see’

Kane has taken his game to the next level this season. Often dropping deeper into midfield as a number 10, he has become the side’s chief creator as well as main goalscorer.

Merson has been stunned by Kane’s transformation. He argues Kane’s passing range is now comparable with Manchester City’s De Bruyne. The City star produced a staggering 20 Premier League assists in 2019/20.

“I cannot believe what I see with Kane,” Merson said.

“Some of the passes, crosses, they are Kevin De Bruyne! Harry Kane has started to do what Kevin De Bruyne does.”

Kane’s stunning start

Having assumed his new role in the Spurs side, Kane has had a spectacular start to the season. He has registered nine assists in as many league games, while also chipping in with seven goals.

He delivered another colossal performance last weekend as Tottenham saw off Manchester City 2-0. Kane set up Giovani Lo Celso for Spurs’ second goal.

Tottenham will hope Kane can maintain his form and stay injury-free as they enter a crucial period in their campaign.

Spurs face Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Leicester in the run-up to Christmas.
