Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman has responded to what Nick Diaz said about him ahead of UFC 266 this weekend.
Diaz is set to make his long-awaited comeback with a rematch against Robbie Lawler. The two veterans faced each other over 17 years ago in UFC 47, where Diaz finished the Ruthless one in the second round.
Lawler would undoubtedly love to get his revenge this weekend, but Diaz has revealed he didn’t even want to fight him again. He believes that he should’ve been fighting Usman for the Welterweight belt instead.
What did Nick Diaz say about Kamaru Usman?
In an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto ahead of UFC 266, Diaz said: “I think I’ll beat the s**t out of Usman.
“I’ll have a better shot against Usman than I do Lawler, just because I already beat Lawler. This doesn’t make sense for me to go in and fight Robbie Lawler again.
“I don’t know why I’m doing this. This should not happen. Whoever set this up is an idiot. I don’t know why I’m doing this, I don’t know why this happened. I should be fighting Kamaru Usman — and that’s it.”
The Nigerian Nightmare responds
Usman is currently the pound-for-pound number one ranked MMA fighter in the world. (Ranking MMA) He is 19-1 in his professional career, with his only loss coming all the way back in 2013 to Jose Caceres at CFA 11.
The Nigerian Nightmare is booked to defend his title against Colby Covington next. He is the favourite in that fight and if he does win like we expect him to, a fight with Diaz could well be on the cards, if he beats Lawler this weekend.
Usman heard Diaz’s comments loud and clear. He took to Twitter and responded with a four-word message saying: “I like that Energy!!!”
