Josip Ilicic’s goal in Italian side Atalanta’s 2-0 win at Liverpool last night was his first since returning from a lengthy absence caused by depression. The illness was reportedly due to complications with covid-19 and alleged rumours his wife had been romantically involved with another man, according to Oh My Goal. But how true are the rumours and who is Josip Ilicic’s wife?

Who is Josip Ilicic’s wife?

Who is Josip Ilicic’s wife? Not much is known about Ilicic’s private life, especially in regards to his wife. Her name is Tina Polovina and, according to unconfirmed reports from FutballNews.com, she is a former gymnast.

It is alleged the Prijedor-born player suffered from depression after a rumoured affair. However, neither Ilicic nor Atalanta have officially addressed the speculation.

The rumours

Ilicic’s Instagram profile dispels any allegations. He continues to follow Tina’s account, with pictures of her on his profile:

Speaking to Italian outlet Corriere Della Sera, Atalanta teammate Alejandro Gomez was adamant Ilicic’s depression was due to complications with coronavirus.

Gomez, who starred in Atalanta’s victory at Anfield, said: “(Ilicic) had the coronavirus and suffered a lot. He fell into depression. The head then comes to a point where it explodes. But he is fine now. It is very important for us.”

Ilicic’s career

Ilicic has become a fans’ favourite since making the switch from Fiorentina to Bergamo-based Atalanta.

He has been involved in 139 goals in 296 Italian top-flight appearances and has led a revival for his side in the Champions League.

The Slovenian first came to attention when he scored four goals for Atalanta in last season’s last-16 second-leg win at Valencia. It was one of five goals he scored in last season’s Champions League.

However, his absence following football’s resumption in June was felt by La Dea in the European tournament, their debut season.

Atalanta were subsequently knocked out in the quarter-finals.

The Italian side would have undoubtedly had more of a chance had Ilicic played. However, this season could see his side go deeper into the competition.
