Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has suffered an injury while training with the England national team, according to the Daily Mail.

England manager Gareth Southgate is expected to reveal the extent of the injury imminently, with the centre-back set to miss the nation’s meeting with the Republic of Ireland on Thursday evening.

The Three Lions host Stephen Kenny’s side in a friendly encounter, before their final two Nations League matches against Belgium and Iceland.

Southgate’s men sit third in the current standings, with seven points from their four matches so far.

Worrying times for Liverpool

Gomez’s injury will be of huge frustration for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, with the club currently in the midst of a defensive injury crisis.

Leading centre-back Virgil van Dijk is expected to miss the majority of the campaign after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury against Everton, with Fabinho pulling up with a hamstring injury in the Champions League meeting with FC Midtjylland.

Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold also damaged his hamstring in Sunday’s draw at Manchester City, leaving Joel Matip as the club’s only recognised senior centre-back.

Reds boss Klopp recently reiterated claims that Premier League players need more protection amid the hectic fixture list.

Equally frustrating for Southgate

While Gomez’s club will have major concerns, the news will also come as a major disappointment to Southgate.

The England boss has turned to Wolves defender Conor Coady and Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings in recent months, with Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker regularly occupying the other spots in central defence.

Gomez did, however, feature heavily in the country’s recent matches against Iceland, Denmark and Wales, playing a key role as England kept a clean sheet on all three occasions.
