Kyle Walker-Peters was named man of the match as Southampton beat Liverpool 1-0 on Monday night.
Walker-Peters enjoyed a strong 2020 at Southampton, initially on loan from Tottenham before joining permanently in the summer.
BBC pundit Ian Wright has admitted he was surprised Tottenham sold the English defender.
Speaking on his Wrighty’s House podcast, the former Arsenal man said he’d been impressed with the right back this season.
“I found it a surprise that Tottenham let him go,” said Wright of Walker-Peters when discussing underrated stars of the season so far.
“All due respect to Serge Aurier, who seems to have found a little bit of something under Mourinho.
“But as a footballer, and what Walker-Peters is doing… I thought ‘hang on a minute, he’s doing everything’.
“He’s getting forward, he’s defending very well. Played brilliantly against Mane. It’s like (Brighton’s) Tariq Lamptey.”
Walker-Peters’s situation at Spurs was a strange one last season, going back to Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.
Kieran Trippier was sold and not replaced but still Walker-Peters wasn’t given an extended run in the side.
As Wright says, Mourinho is getting a tune out of £23 million (BBC) man Aurier and he also bought Matt Doherty from Wolves.
Mourinho is clearly happy with his more experienced options at right back, but Walker-Peters is absolutely shining away from Spurs.
