Midfielder Houssem Aouar has told The Metro he’s happy at Lyon amid speculation the Frenchman wanted to join Arsenal this summer.

The 22 year-old was heavily linked with a move to the Gunners during the summer transfer window. However, the move failed to materialise.

The midfielder was at the top of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s wish list this summer, alongside Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey.

The Gunners acquired the Ghanaian in a £45 million move but fell short of Aouar’s £55 million valuation.

‘I’m the opposite’

Aouar was rumoured to be upset the transfer fell through. Now, however, the 22 year-old has indicated he was only thinking about bringing success to Les Gones.

“I’m the opposite. I am at home in the club I love, with my friends and my family,” Aouar said.

“I am in the head space to have a great season with my club and get back the points we have lost.”

Lyon ambitions

Lyon sit 14th in Ligue 1, winning only one of their six matches following four draws and one defeat.

The side has brought in Serie A contingent Lucas Paqueta and Mattia De Sciglio to bolster their squad. However, Aouar indicated the overall team had to show its quality in terms of results.

“There is a lot of motivation. We have a quality group with a very good team, notably in attack with certain arrivals.

“We are satisfied with this team but now we are going to have to show it on the pitch a bit more than we have done at the beginning of this season.”

France call-up

The Frenchman, who has three years left on his contract at Lyon, impressed in the side’s Champions League campaign last term. He scored one goal and provided six assists from eight matches.

His performances earned him a maiden call up to the senior international squad in August. However, having tested positive for covid-19, he was forced to drop out.

He eventually made his senior France debut in Wednesday’s 7-1 thrashing of Ukraine.
