Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has returned to his club for assessment following his withdrawal from the England squad, as reported by This Is Anfield.

England face Iceland tomorrow night in their final UEFA Nations League group game with nothing to play for.

Henderson was substituted at half-time against Belgium on Sunday after feeling tightness in his leg.

Henderson adds to injury woes

Liverpool are undergoing a major injury crisis in defence at the moment. Centre-backs Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez are sidelined for the majority of the season.

Gomez ruptured his left knee patellar tendon while training with England ahead of the Three Lions’ current three-game spell.

Brazilian midfielder Fabinho, who had been standing in at centre-back, was injured in a Champions League match against Midtjylland before the international break.

Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold then sustained a calf injury in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City on 8 November.

Some Liverpool fans on Twitter are pointing to their players’ workload as a major reason behind their injury woes.

Thiago still absent

Meanwhile, it remains unclear when new signing Thiago Alcantara will return to action.

The midfielder was injured following a tackle by Everton’s Richarlison during the Merseyside derby, for which the Brazilian was sent off.

It seems Henderson’s withdrawal is only a precautionary measure and Reds fans will hope the injury isn’t as bad as first feared. The Englishman has been tipped to switch into central defence.

England in dead rubber

England can no longer quality from their Nations League group. Iceland have lost all their games this time round and will be relegated.

When the sides met in September, a Raheem Sterling penalty in the 89th minute secured victory.

Birkir Bjarnason then missed a penalty for Iceland in injury time in an eventful finish to a dull match.

Raheem Sterling has also withdrawn from the squad after suffering a minor injury.
