Former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has backed striker Leigh Griffiths to do a job for the Hoops if he is selected for the first-team, the Daily Record reports.

Griffiths hasn’t featured for Celtic once this season. However, with the injury suffered to Albian Ajeti he may find himself back in contention for a place in the Celtic team.

Strachan thinks that Griffiths is more than capable of helping Celtic navigate a busy fixture list.

“A terrific player”

“Whatever goes on in the world of Leigh Griffiths I still think he is a terrific player. Seriously” Strachan said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“People might wonder where he’s goes from here but it’s very simple, your career is determined by yourself. He’s grease lightning over 10 yards. And what that means is, after that first 10 yards, he can relax when he’s going in on goal” Strachan concluded.

It will be interesting to see if Griffiths features for Celtic in the Europa League play-off against Sarajevo on Thursday. There is no way he will start the game, Odsonne Edouard will get that role.

However, he will have a chance of making the substitute’s bench at the very least.

Ajeti’s injury has come at an intriguing time for Celtic. There is only two games to be played before the international break, then the first game after that is the Glasgow Derby.

Too soon to start a game

Could Griffiths start the game against St Johnstone? Possibly. It would be a gamble though. Perhaps it is more likely that if Edouard doesn’t start that game then Patryk Klimla will.

You also have to take into account if Odsonne Edouard will still be at Celtic when the transfer window closes. If he leaves, then Griffiths’ chances of featuring this season will greatly increase.

Of course, Griffiths and Edouard were excellent in a partnership in the second-half of last season, before Scottish football came to a halt.

Griffiths has it all to prove really, as he is the only Celtic first-team striker not to play a minute of football this season.

Only time will tell if he can live up to the comments made by Strachan this season.
