Chelsea fans have taken to Twitter to back the words of Frank Lampard after the manager reiterated the importance of striker Olivier Giroud to his squad, as reported by BT Sport.

Chelsea booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League last night with a 2-1 win over Rennes at Roazhon Park.

Giroud came off the bench in northern France to head the winning goal in stoppage time.

Lack of game time for Giroud

It hasn’t been plain sailing for the French striker this season, however. Chelsea bolstered their attacking options in the summer by signing Germany striker Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

This season, Werner and England striker Tammy Abraham have been Lampard’s preferred options up front. Chelsea currently sit third in the Premier League table on 18 points

Since making the switch across London from Arsenal in January 2018, Giroud has scored 30 goals in 96 appearances for the Blues.

As well as excelling at club level, Giroud has now scored 44 goals for the French national team, only Thierry Henry has scored more.

Giroud, however, has only played 36 minutes in the Premier League this season.

Last night was only the Frenchman’s second appearance in the Champions League too but he snatched the three points by heading home a rebound from a Werner effort.

Lampard: ‘Happy with him’

Speaking after the match about the 34-year-old’s place in the side, Lampard said: “I hope and I think Oli knows how much I’m happy with him and how much I rely on him in moments.

“Every player wants to play every game. It’s an impossible part of my job to keep them all happy but hopefully he knows and he feels content.

“He got minutes coming on today, and there will be games when he starts for us as well.”

Here’s what some Chelsea fans had to say on Twitter about Giroud:
