Olivier Giroud’s four-star Champions League performance last night has had Chelsea fans purring, with many saying the Frenchman “has to start” against Leeds United this weekend.
Giroud has had a point to prove to Blues manager Frank Lampard. And you can’t stick your foot in the door much better than a perfect hat-trick and a penalty in the Champions League.
However the Frenchman, who is out of contract in June, has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge when the transfer window opens in a few weeks’ time.
Giroud’s display in the 4-0 win at Sevilla certainly provides food for thought for Lampard. The manager has mainly opted for Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner up front this season.
Giroud ‘has to start’
Stalemates in the Champions League (Sevilla at home) – and against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League – have led some Chelsea fans to question Abraham’s finishing.
Against Spurs, the Englishman squandered chance after chance from pinpoint Reece James deliveries. Given Giroud’s prowess as a target man, he would surely have tucked some of those chances away?
The 34-year-old is arguably one of the most underrated strikers in world football. His movement and link-up play inside the area ranks among the world’s best.
After last night’s heroics and scoring the injury-time winner in their previous European match, against Rennes, many fans believe he “has to start” against Leeds on Saturday.
Here’s how some of them reacted on Twitter:
Giroud against Sevilla
Giroud got into dangerous positions throughout the game. His first two goals oozed class. He shifted the ball on to his left foot to curl home the opener, with a dinked-effort over the keeper for his second.
His excellent movement off the ball allowed him to complete the perfect hat-trick with a header and then win a penalty for his fourth.
His quadruple against the Spaniards took Giroud’s tally for the season to six goals in only ten matches.
Furthermore, the former Arsenal forward has notched up an incredible 16 goals in European competition since 2018/19.
That figure is third overall behind legendary marksmen Robert Lewandowski (26) and Lionel Messi (18).
