Frank Lampard has revealed that Edouard Mendy will miss out this weekend against Southampton due to a thigh injury.

The Senegalese goalkeeper first reported the issue on international duty, and has not recovered in time for tomorrow’s clash at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard broke the news in his pre-match press conference, adding that he hopes it is not a prolonged absence.

“Mendy won’t be fit for the match tomorrow, we hope the injury’s not too long,” he said, as reported by

Since arriving at the club last month, Mendy has made a positive impression. The 28-year-old kept a clean sheet on his Premier League debut in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Possible chance for Kepa

However, his misfortune could offer a reprieve to Kepa. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper has had a torrid time in recent months. He started this season as first-choice, but was swiftly replaced after a glaring mistake against Liverpool in September.

When asked whether Kepa would be trusted with the gloves on Saturday, Lampard remained tight-lipped.

“I’ll make that decision myself for tomorrow”, he confirmed.

Ziyech returns

With Chelsea looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season, Lampard gave a further update on the condition of some of his other key players.

Ben Chilwell will be in the squad, despite recent fitness issues, and is joined by Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech. Pulisic has yet to start a game this season after injuring his hamstring in the FA Cup final against Arsenal.

Summer signing Ziyech will be hoping to make his long-awaited debut. The Moroccan winger struggled with a knee problem in pre-season, and Lampard has stressed that he is not ready to start the match.

Experienced defender Thiago Silva will be unavailable, though. Chelsea have opted not to risk the former PSG man following his late return from international duty with Brazil.
