Alexandre Pato has been linked with a surprise move to Birmingham City according to Calciomercato.

The Brazilian is a free agent after leaving Brazilian club Sao Paolo in August.

This means Aitor Karanka’s side could bring him in even though the EFL transfer window does not reopen until January.

What happened to Alexandre Pato?

After winning the UEFA Golden Boy award in 2009 big things were expected of Alexandre Pato.

However, persistent injury problems meant that he was never really able to live up to his potential.

Now at the age of 31 the Brazilian has had quite a nomadic career since leaving Milan in 2013.

Following a return to his home country with Corinthians he endured a disappointing loan spell at Chelsea where managed to score just once before moving permanently to Villareal.

He then spent time in China with Tianjin Tianhai where he managed an impressive 36 goals in 60 games.

Most recently he played for Sao Paolo, but he is available again after having his contract terminated in the summer.

Links to Birmingham

Despite the downturn in Pato’s career the links to Birmingham City are still pretty remarkable.

The Blues are in desperate need of some fire power after managing just three goals in their opening seven Championship games.

Therefore, it would represent a massive coup if they were able to bring the striker to St. Andrews.

After selling Jude Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund for £30 million they have cash in the bank.

However, Bluenoses may well be wary of news linking them to a star who will undoubtedly demand high wages.

They were deducted nine points for breaching profitability and sustainability rules last season.

The West Midlands outfit can ill afford a repeat of that if they are to avoid dropping down to League One.
