Marcus Rashford knew he was on penalty duty last night Bruno Fernandes has told BT Sport, via the Daily Mail.

Fernandes passed up the chance to complete his hat-trick to let Rashford score in Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League.

After the game, Fernandes admitted Rashford was always going to take the penalty.

He said: “Of course, every player wants to score a hat-trick, you know? But after the game (against West Brom) in the Premier League, I told Rashy he would take the next one. I remembered that.

“Also, Rashy is one of the top scorers in the Champions League so I think it will be important for him to keep going there and taking that confidence.”

Here is what some United fans said on Twitter about Fernandes giving the penalty to Rashford:

The win means United only need to draw their next group game against Paris St-Germain to confirm progress to the last-16.

Great night for Fernandes

Fernandes opened the scoring with a great strike from outside the area after seven minutes.

He doubled his tally with a tap-in 12 minutes later after Istanbul goalkeeper Mert Gunok fumbled an attempted catch.

United were awarded a penalty after 35 minutes but, although Fernandes is the Red Devils’ usual penalty-taker and was on a hat-trick, the Portuguese midfielder still let Rashford take it.

Rashford did the rest, with substitute Dan James scoring late on to seal victory for United despite a wobble that saw Istanbul pull one back and hit the bar.

United now have nine points from four group matches and are three points ahead of PSG and RB Leipzig.

Penalty expert

Since moving to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in January, Fernandes has scored 12 penalties in all competitions.

The Portuguese midfielder has scored 21 goals in 35 appearances for United, as well as providing 13 assists.
