Eric Dier is reportedly one of the Tottenham players that may be sold in the next transfer window, but they should bin any plans to offload him and give him a fresh chance in a new role.
According to the Times, the England international is one of four players that Spurs may look to show the exit door alongside Serge Aurier, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker-Peters.
The report adds that defender Jan Vertonghen is set to leave in the summer amid interest from Inter Milan.
Dier’s Spurs career has been on the decline during the past couple of years and he looks a shadow of the bright youngster that arrived from Sporting Lisbon back in 2014.
The 26-year-old showed his versatility to mould himself into a defensive midfielder and was a key player under former boss Mauricio Pochettino during a time that they pushed close for a Premier League title.
With Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld an ever-present combination at centre-back during that time, Dier often played in a midfield role screening the back four.
But levels of performances have dipped for the English enforcer recently and he may not have the mobility in the centre of the park to perform on the elite stage as a midfielder.
Spurs manager Jose Mourinho shouldn’t give up on Dier just yet though, as he’s shown he can play centre-back in the past and a switch of position could be exactly what he needs to save his career in North London.
Dier has proven he can look far more comfortable slotting in at centre-back where he reads the game well, plus he’s got a physical edge and is strong in the air too.
Spurs need to find a solution to Vertonghen’s expected exit from their defence and the answer may already be in their squad.
Dier certainly shouldn’t be written off aged just 26 and he could still yet reach his peak in a centre-back position if Mourinho gives him the chance.
