2021 Dubai CrossFit championship leaderboard explored after day 1

The 2021 Dubai CrossFit championships has finally begun as competitors test their abilities in the three-day event, which was not able to go ahead last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

As day one of the event comes to an end, some CrossFit fans are curious to know what the 2021 Dubai CrossFit championship leaderboard looks like. Let’s take a look…

2021 Dubai CrossFit championship leaderboard so far 

On the first day of the Dubai CrossFit Championship, competitors competed in two challenging events, 1A, also known as Stay Frosty, and 1B. 

For the first event, competitors had to complete five rounds of 500m sets on a ski erg, as well as run up and down a 400m ski slope. 

The second saw the championship’s athletes run up the full distance of the ski slope while wearing a weighted vest. Here’s how the leaderboard is looking after the first two events: 

Women’s: 

  • 1. Samantha Briggs
  • 2. Kristin Holte
  • 3. Laura Horvath
  • 4. Mikaela Norman 
  • 5. Gabriela Migala

Men’s: 

  • 1. Ricky Garard
  • 2. Roman Khrennikov
  • 3. Willy Georges
  • 4. Lazar Dulić
  • 5. Henrik Haapalainen

Who are the athletes at the top?

After day 1 of the Dubai CrossFit championship, Samantha Briggs and Ricky Garard are seen to be leading the way. 

Samantha Briggs, 39, is no stranger to the Dubai CrossFit championships, having won in 2018 and placing second in 2016 and third in 2019. 

Ricky Garard, 27, has been competing in CrossFit since 2014 and recently returned to competing following a four-year suspension, as per the South China Morning Post

A look at the returning competitors

On the woman’s pro front, a number of past competitors, including Samantha Briggs, have returned. 

Some of the female athletes who have returned for the 2021 championships include Laura Horvath, who came in second in 2017, Karin Frey, who also won second place in 2019 as well as two-time winner Sara Sigmundsdóttir, who won in 2019 and 2016 as well as reaching third in 2018. 

CrossFit fans may also recognise some of the male pro competitors. Both Roman Khrennikov and Willy Georges, who are in the top five for day 1, have both previously placed third in the championship, Khrennikov in 2019 and Georges in 2018.
