Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have a new star in their ranks – Venkatesh Rajasekaran Iyer.
The 26-year-old made his debut for Eoin Morgan’s side against RCB on Monday. He ended the game unbeaten at 41 off just 27 balls as he helped KKR pick up a comfortable win over the Bangaloreans.
Iyer has become a household name over the last few days. Almost every cricket fan is keen to learn more about the man who most people hadn’t even heard of before Kolkata picked him up in the IPL 2021 auction.
How much did Venkatesh Iyer cost KKR in IPL 2021 auction?
KKR signed seven new players in the IPL 2021 auction and Iyer was arguably the least exciting name on the list. However, he is the one who is making the most noise now out of all their new players.
The Knight Riders forked out ₹20,00,000 (£19,700) for Iyer in the auction in February this year. (Times of Sports) He was their joint-cheapest buy in this year’s auction, but we’re certain that his stock will go up considerably now.
Iyer in IPL 2021
As mentioned above, Iyer only made his IPL debut earlier this week against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He thoroughly impressed there, but his knock today against Mumbai was arguably superior.
Mumbai set KKR a target of 156, which is not great, but it’s a lot better than what RCB could manage on Monday. The pressure was on Iyer to get his side off to a good start and he did so in tremendous fashion.
Iyer scored 53 off just 30 balls to help KKR get over the line comfortably. He, unfortunately, got out in the 12th over, but the job was done at that point and fans can’t wait to see more of him in the coming games.
