The brave MMA fighter will be a huge underdog vs Khamzat Chimaev but it’s disappointing to see the term ‘Nate Diaz dead’ trending online.

Nate Diaz is one of the UFC’s most popular fighters and is arguably the most game athlete in combat history. The Stockton native has been requesting a major fight for some time – and it seems he finally has an opponent.

ESPN reports Diaz is set to face rising star Khamzat Chimaev on September 10 as the main bout of UFC 279 at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

Diaz is on the last fight of his current UFC deal and has been at a stand-off with UFC for some time. As per The New York Post, Diaz told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour he felt the UFC was “holding me hostage” after struggling to find him an opponent for his last contracted fight.

Diaz comes in as huge underdog vs Khamzat Chimaev

Diaz and Chimaev have long been rumored to fight but it has still surprised more than a few fans that the contest looks to have been made.

Chimaev is the rising star of the welterweight division, coming off the back of a huge win against Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. Chimaev is the no.3 ranked fighter at 170lb and is undefeated (11-0), which includes five straight UFC wins.

Diaz, meanwhile, has won just one fight in the past six years, a unanimous decision victory over Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 in August 2019. Since then, he has lost to Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards.

Given both fighters appear to be on opposite trajectories, it’s no surprise to see bookmakers making Diaz a huge underdog. MMA Fighting reports one bookmaker has Diaz as a +775 underdog, meaning a bet of $100 would return a profit of $775. The same bookmaker gives him a 11.43 per cent chance of winning, while Chimaev is massive favorite at -1100 and an implied winning probability of 91.67 per cent.

Khamzat threatens ‘funeral’ while pros warn it ‘could get ugly’

Khamzat has already reacted to the potential fight, saying in a statement via ESPN: “I am going to handle Nate Diaz’s funeral with the UFC.”

Diaz has a legion of MMA fans but a number of them are concerned about him going into a match vs such a strong opponent.

Some online fans used the cruel phrases ‘RIP Nate’ and ‘Nate Diaz’s death’, while several pros claimed it could get “ugly”:

One fan wrote: “He is not going to leave the UFC walking but he is going to go on a stretcher.”

“Literally feeding Nate to the wolves,” another added.

However, stranger things have happened inside the Octagon, and some are backing Diaz to pull off a huge upset:

Will Khamzat cruise to victory? Or will Nate shock the world? Let us know in the comments below!
