Muhammad Ali had much more of a head start in the sport. In fact, Ali began training at the age of 12. He started training with Joe Martin, a local police officer and boxing trainer. Ali met Martin after his bike was stolen and he reported it.
Ali’s first amateur bout was in 1954, when he was just 12. Two years later, Ali won the 1956 Golden Gloves tournament for novices in the light heavyweight class.
In 1959, he won the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, as well as the Amateur Athletic Union’s national title for the light heavyweight division. Muhammad Ali would’ve been around 17 years old at the time.
His professional career spanned 21 years. Muhammad Ali retired from boxing in 1981 at the age of 39 after winning the Heavyweight World Championship three times. On top of more than 100 amateur bouts, his final professional record was 56 wins and 5 losses with 37 knockouts.

Although Nico Ali Walsh has just made his professional debut, he has been training as a boxer for several years.
On 17 July 2017, aged 17, Nico shared an Instagram of him sparring.
Over the next years, Nico continued to share Instagrams of himself training and boxing.
He announced he was turning pro on 7 March 2020. Nico was 19 years old when he made the announcement.
