The two super-middleweight’s got into it at their press conference on Tuesday 21 September. 29-year-old Caleb Plant was left with a cut right eye, and boxing fans were quick to mock him for coming out second best with Canelo.
Canelo and Caleb Plant trade blows at press conference
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Caleb Plant got into it at a recent press conference ahead of their 6 November fight.
The two men were at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills to promote their world super-middleweight unification fight.
However, things turned violent as the two men squared off.
The Mexican pound-for-pound king pushed the unbeaten American before evading what appeared to be a slap.
Alvarez then managed to land two blows of his own on the 29-year-old, which left a cut under his right eye.
Canelo says Caleb Plant talked smack about his mother
After the scuffle had passed, fans wondered what Caleb Plant said to Canelo to provoke such a reaction.
Well, apparently Plant called Canelo a motherf*****.
However, Canelo’s English is a little shaky, and it seems as though he thought Plant was actually insulting his mother, rather than throwing out a generic expression.
A journalist asked: “What did Caleb Plant say in your face that seemed to set you off?”
Alvarez replied: “Oh, he talked about my mum. He said ‘you motherf**ker’ so you passed the line right there, so that’s why I pushed him and then he came back with a left hook. That’s what happened.”
It seems the diss may have been lost in translation, with Canelo later tweeting footage of the scrap with the caption, ‘Don’t talk about my mom’.
Fans mock Plant after coming out second best during face-off
It was clear Plant came off second best during the face-off, staggering backwards before being cut under his right eye.
The boxer tweeted the following in response to those claiming his blow missed.
However, it was clear Canelo came out of the exchange looking the better man.
Plant had a cut under his right eye, and while it may have been from the sunglasses he was wearing, the damage was evident.
People were quick to point it out to him on social media.
Alvarez is the current WBC, WBA and WBO title holder, while Plant holds the IBF belt.
Their unification fight in Las Vegas on 6 November will be for all the marbles.
