Jamie Carragher couldn’t resist praising reported Liverpool transfer target and Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

Konsa’s excellent defensive contribution at the heart of Villa’s defence has not only attracted plaudits from pundits such as Carragher but also merited the attentions of England’s elite clubs.

According to the Athletic, the 23-year-old will be on Liverpool’s transfer radar when this summer’s window opens.

Carragher on Konsa

Carragher added fuel to the fire after his glowing review of the England U21 international during his pre-match analysis of Villa’s game at Sheffield United tomorrow (6pm).

The former Liverpool defender said: “A player I want to highlight is Konsa. He has made more blocks than anyone else in the Premier League this season.

“He’s a brilliant defender and has made a huge difference.”

Carragher is also a big fan of Konsa’s central defensive partner, Tyrone Mings, and Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

The pundit said: “That triangle, I think, has been huge for them.

“As a partnership (Konsa and Mings), they’ve played together more than anyone else in the Premier League so they are really consistent.

“Honestly, I can’t talk enough about how impressed I’ve been with (Konsa) defensively.

“He doesn’t do silly things. He’s very brave at getting the blocks in.”

Hero for the Villains

Villa signed Konsa from Brentford for £12 million (Sky Sports) in 2019, which has turned out to be a shrewd bit of business.

The defender has only missed two Premier League games this season, both through injury.

His contribution to Dean Smith’s solid defence is one of the main reasons clubs such as Liverpool are circling.

In the 22 league games Konsa has featured in, Villa have kept 11 clean sheets.

They also boast the third-best goals against record in the division, behind Manchester City and Chelsea.

Klopp needs Konsa

Jurgen Klopp could seriously do with a player and a record like Konsa’s in his squad.

Liverpool’s efforts to retain their Premier League title challenge has been derailed by injuries to key defensive personnel.

Konsa looks head and shoulders above the January recruits Klopp brought in to paper over the cracks.

Admittedly, Ben Davies has yet to feature for the club after joining from Preston North End but Ozan Kabak’s performances have failed to inspire fans.

Konsa coming to town would definitely go down well in the red half of the city.
