BBC pundit Garth Crooks has named Emi Martinez in his team of the week.

Martinez kept a clean sheet as Aston Villa earned a 1-0 win over Wolves at Molineux.

And former Tottenham striker Crooks questioned whether Mikel Arteta should have let the goalkeeper leave Arsenal in the summer.

Arsenal’s loss is Villa’s gain and it was proved once again after a weekend masterclass which clearly impressed Crooks.

“The save from Daniel Podence with Martinez at full stretch was impressive but it was the instinctive stop from Leander Dendoncker that made me once again question whether Arsenal were wise to let this goalkeeper leave.

“Martinez looked impressive when he came in for the injured Bernd Leno prior to leaving the capital. Since his arrival at Villa, the Argentine keeper has been outstanding and a valuable addition to a young team going places.

“Martinez made seven saves against Wolves, the most he has made in a single Premier League game.”

Arteta had a decision to make over his goalkeeping situation in the summer.

In Leno and Martinez, he had two goalkeepers who had proved themselves to be good enough to start.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in a similar position at Manchester United, and elected to keep Dean Henderson around to battle David de Gea.

Arteta gave Martinez a chance to play every week, and raised a reported £20 million from the sale.

Leno hasn’t played badly this season but Martinez has shone at Villa. It’s likely Crooks won’t be the only one asking himself if Arteta made the right call between the sticks.
