Television pundit Garth Crooks has selected Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in his team of the year, following an impressive 2020 campaign, according to BBC Sport.

The Toffees forward has been in terrific form since the start of the calendar year. He has contributed to 21 attacking returns. These include 19 goals scored and two assists provided.

A total of fifteen of his involvements have come this season, with Calvert-Lewin scoring five goals and assisting once during the second half of last season (Transfermarkt).

Everton’s current campaign differs greatly to the one that they endured last season. At this round of games last term, they were 15 points worse off and occupying 18th in the table.

‘Led the line gallantly’

Crooks insisted that Calvert-Lewin’s influence played an integral role to the side’s immediate change in fortunes last term. He scored twice as Everton defeated Chelsea to end a run of three successive losses.

“Last season Everton were in total disarray, with the threat of relegation hanging over them.

“In came caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson, who grabbed the team by the scruff of the neck and invested an enormous amount of faith in a young footballer by the name of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

“He led the line gallantly and chased every ball. He even scored the occasional goal.”

The side currently sit fourth in the Premier League with a game in hand against Manchester City. And should they win it, they could move within a point of city rivals and leaders Liverpool.

‘Phenomenal’

Yet, Crooks believed that the Blues’ stellar season this term is mostly due to Calvert-Lewin’s ‘phenomenal transformation’ under manager Carlo Ancelotti, who took over on December 21 2019.

“However, when Carlo Ancelotti arrived at Goodison a striker was born. Goals seem to be flying in from everywhere for him now, with England call-ups quickly following.

“The transformation in the lad’s game during the past 12 months has been quite phenomenal and that’s why he leads the line in my team of the year.”

He has gone on to earn five senior international appearances for the Three Lions. He has scored twice overall – a goal apiece in respective 3-0 friendly wins over Wales (his debut) and the Republic of Ireland.
