Junior ice hockey team the Kenai Brown Bears have announced the shock death of former assistant captain Alex Klekotka who was aged just 23. Many are in disbelief after hearing the tragic news.

Kenai River Brown Bears announce death of former assistant captain

A tribute posted on Instagram stated Alex Klekotka passed away on Saturday, 18 December 2021 at just 23 years old.

Klekotka was former assistant captain of the Kenai River Brown Bears, a Tier II junior ice hockey team in the North American Hockey League based in Soldotna, Alaska.

@krbbears took to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook on 20 December 2021 to announce the unfortunate death of Alex Klekotka.

Accompanied by a black-and-white photograph of the former player, the caption posted on all social media platforms reads:

“Few words can express the deep pain and sorrow of losing our former assistant captain, Alex Klekotka. On behalf of the entire Kenai River Brown Bears organisation, staff, players and fans, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Alex’s family, friends, and teammates.”

Klekotka’s cause of death has yet to be revealed. However, his sudden passing has left many people in shock and disbelief.

Who was ice hockey player Alex Klekotka?

Alex Klekotka was an ice hockey player from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and attended Northview High School, as per his Facebook profile.

Klekotka attended Grand Rapids Community College from 2017 to 2019, as per his LinkedIn profile.

Most recently, he was attending Aquinas College in Grand Rapids as a senior studying a Bachelor of Science degree in sustainable business and marketing from 2019. His studies would have been finalised in 2022.

Klekotka took part in men’s varsity hockey and was the AQ Athletic Sustainability captain.

Over on Twitter, @klekotka_12‘s personal account has more than 600 followers. He often shared sporting content.

Alex joined the men’s ice hockey roster before teaming up with the Kenai River Brown Bears for three years and later playing for Aquinas.

Alex Klekotka was named 2021 WHAC Player of the Year.

Tributes to the sportsman pour in online

Sporting social media accounts also paid tribute to Alex.

@hockeyhousepod wrote that the hockey world lost an all-time teammate, remembering Klekotka as 2021 WHAC Player of the Year and sending their thoughts to his family and the Aquinas hockey community.

Travis Nichol, coach of the Wildcat hockey team Alex Klekotka’s brother Brady plays for, expressed their condolences towards the family.
