Advertising cuts threaten journalism but sharing can save lives

Luis Santos April 9, 2020

‘Never in our wildest dreams did we anticipate this and we are heartbroken to have to let go these hard-working and talented people’

Michael Wagner, publisher of the San Antonio Current, which laid off ten members of staff in mid-March

The headline on a 7 April report by William Turvill for trade magazine Press Gazette read “Absolutely Brutal”, and that sums up the economic pain spreading to the media sector globally.

As Turvill reported, staff at more than 1,000 local newspapers in the US are under furlough amid cost-cutting measures, with more sure to follow.

His article also provides an interactive map, which highlights where these 1,000 publications are located.

‘Covid-19 has caused a sharp contraction in advertising markets generally, which is putting a huge strain on news publishers’

NMA head David Chavern renewing his call for assistance from the government

Local newspapers that rely on advertisers for their revenue are the ones being hit hardest – one Illinois-based publisher with 15 local papers has gone out of business already.

Although it remains unclear where the axe will fall on larger publishers, Turvill writes, cuts to pay and working hours are being introduced widely.

Gannett, which owns USA Today and more than 260 daily publications in North America, and Lee Enterprises, which publishes 75 daily newspapers across 26 states, are only a few companies to introduce cost-cutting measures.

Several magazines and consumer websites such as Buzzfeed, Vice and Sports Illustrated have announced cuts too.

Proud to support the NHS

It may come as no surprise to learn advertising is crucial for The Focus, which makes us no different to other publications, but all revenue from the site is funnelling into the NHS – as you can read in our mission statement at the bottom of our landing page.

That’s why sharing any of our articles on social media could help save lives in the UK. Thanks for sharing.
