Some fans of TV show The Masked Singer suspect the people in the lambs costumes are Nineties girl band Wilson Phillips – leaving others to ask, why did the group break up and did they reform?
Fox show The Masked singer is back with a new series and, after The Lambs smashed it in Nineties theme week, some fans seem convinced they know who’s behind the masks – Wilson Phillips.
The girl band disbanded in 1993 but have reunited over the years so fans hope a possible appearance on the show means the girls have got the band back together.
Who is in Wilson Phillips?
Wilson Phillips is one of the OG girl bands. The trio – Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson and Chynna Phillips – formed in 1989 with their first album dropping a year later. The group’s eponymous album sold more than ten million copies worldwide and included five major US hit singles, three making number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 1990, the group won the Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single Of The Year for Hold On and were nominated for five Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards.
However, the women didn’t just form the band by chance, they actually grew up together as friends and are part of LA rock royalty. Carnie and Wendy Wilson are daughters of Brian Wilson, of the Beach Boys, while Chynna Phillips’ parents are John and Michelle Phillips, of The Mamas & The Papas. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the girls spent a huge amount of time together while growing up in the LA area.
Why did Wilson Phillips break up?
Less than a year after the release of their second album, the group had gone their separate ways and by 1993 had split. Rumors had been circulating since late 1992 that Wilson Phillips would break up, which the Chicago Tribune reports was due to the girls wanting to pursue solo careers.
Chynna Phillips left first to pursue a career in the industry and released her debut solo album in 1995 entitled Naked and Sacred. The Wilson sisters carried on for a short time following Phillips’ exit and in 1993 released Christmas album Hey Santa!
Masked Singer fans speculate about who’s inside the lamb costumes
As The Masked Singer heats up and fans have been guessing who each character could be, some are absolutely convinced the lambs are the Hold On singers.
According to some fans on Twitter, the trio’s “harmony” is “unforgettable” and couldn’t be anyone but Wilson Phillips.
The clues given for the cute characters have been:
- A milk bottle
- “Miss Piggy’s been our style icon since we were little. We’ve been Beverly Hills besties since day one.”
- They may be related or have grown up together: “We practically grew up with her… and each other.”
- “Famous” on a pair of jeans
- “Venice” written on power lines
- A diamond ring
- Paul McCartney is the biggest celebrity they’ve worked with
- One of them says “Lambs, we have to stay hocused” instead of “focused,” linking to Hocus Pocus for judges
- A movie reel and clapperboard
- Onstage clue: “Go your own way and cruise the country with your besties, turn those daydreams into a reality.”
However, other fans think the characters might be another girl band, the Dixie Chicks.
When did the band get back together?
The Wilson Phillips break didn’t last too long as they briefly reunited in 2001 to perform The Beach Boys’ You’re So Good To Me in a tribute show to Brian Wilson at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Phillips also dedicated the performance to her father, John Phillips, who had passed away a few days earlier.
In 2004, Wilson Phillips had their first official reunion and released the album California. However, the reunion was short-lived and they broke up again.
Things changed in 2010 when the girls reunited for good. They dropped a Christmas album in 2010 and in 2012 released another album entitled Dedicated.
Wilson Phillips also had a cameo appearance in hit 2011 movie Bridesmaids in which they performed Hold On. The last time the trio performed live together was in 2017, at the season finale of NBC’s The New Celebrity Apprentice.
