Why has Steve Harwell retired from Smash Mouth?

Harwell announced his departure from Smash Mouth on 9 October during a New York concert, leaving many fans shocked.

His retirement is due to health issues that have been ongoing for several years. As reported by TMZ, Steve Harwell was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy eight years ago, which affects the heart’s ability to pump blood around the body.

This can lead to other medical conditions such as heart failure and Wernicke’s encephalopathy, an acute neurological condition. Symptoms of Wernicke’s encephalopathy include vision change, and loss of muscle co-ordination and mental activity.

If not treated correctly, Wernicke’s encephalopathy can lead to brain damage, which has prompted Harwell to leave the band to focus on his health.

We wish him all the best.
