As Nirvana face being sued this month over their Nevermind album cover, you might be curious as to the band’s net worth. We explore the fortune of the band’s members.

What is Nirvana’s net worth?

Rock band Nirvana, which featured members Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, is known to many for their success in the early 1990s for tracks Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium and Come As You Are.

Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl are all said to have each had equal shares of the band’s income until 1991 following the release of Nevermind.

According to Rock Celebrities at the time, Novoselic and Grohl are said to have both received 12.5% in royalties, with Cobain, who wrote many of the band’s songs, left with the rest.

At the time of Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, he was said to have had a net worth of $50 million and owned more than 98% of Nirvana’s publishing rights. In 2014 Cobain’s estate was valued at around $450 million, which included the band’s continued album sales and online streams.

Dave Grohl went on to found the Foo Fighters and following his success in both bands is said to have a net worth of 320 million. Elsewhere, according to Celebrity Net Worth, Krist Novoselic is said to have an estimated worth of around $80 million.

How long was Nirvana together?

Nirvana was founded in 1987 by the band’s lead singer Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic.

In the bands first few years, Cobain and Novoselic played alongside several drummers before Dave Grohl finally joined the band in 1990.

Together Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl went on to become one of the most popular bands in the nineties. They later disbanded after four years together in 1994 following the death of the band’s lead singer Kurt Cobain.

Where are Novoselic and Grohl now?

After Kurt Cobain’s death, Dave Grohl continued music initially as a one-man project but later formed his own group, now known as the Foo Fighters.

At the time, Grohl was later joined by fellow bandmates Pat Smear, Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith.

The current members of Foo Fighters include Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Nate Mendel, as well as Taylor Hawkins, who has been with the band since 1997 and Chris Shiflett, who joined in 1999.

Amid Nirvana’s split, Krist Novoselic also continued in music as he formed the band Sweet 75. Over the years he has also appeared alongside his former Nirvana bandmate Grohl and the Foo Fighters.
