Who is Kevin Harrington from Beatles documentary Get Back?

Peter Jackson’s documentary series The Beatles: Get Back concluded yesterday on Disney+ – the 468 minute-long miniseries distills 60 hours of film footage and over 150 hours of audio, and introduces a host of associates and individuals who worked with, or for, the band. Among them is Kevin Harrington, who managed The Beatles’ equipment for two years. What do we know about Harrington?

What was Kevin Harrington’s job working with The Beatles?

From 1968 to 1970, Kevin Harrington worked as an equipment manager, or roadie, for The Beatles – although, he says, he “didn’t really have an official title”.

A couple of weeks ago, Harrington spoke to Rock Cellar Magazine about his role and responsibilities. He took over as equipment manager from Mal Evans, who worked with the band for seven years from 1963.

“First of all,” he said, “you’re in charge of setting up the equipment. Then it’s really a question of whatever the boys want. If I could get it, I would get it. If not, Mal would get it.”

He made tea, got food, restrung guitars, bought drumsticks and plectrums and other bits and bobs.

“What a Beatle wants, a Beatle gets”, was his motto.

He wrote a book about it, too

Harrington authored “Who’s The Redhead On The Roof….?”: My Life With The Beatles, the aim of which was to “clarify” his role “working with the boys”.

“In 1968”, runs the blurb, “I was invited to be in a unique and privileged position in the world of popular music. I was to look after the equipment of the biggest band in the world”.

The book is 76 pages long and has mostly positive reviews from readers. It has an average rating of 3.78 (out of 5) on Goodreads.

What did Kevin Harrington do both before and after The Beatles?

Born in 1950, Harrington grew up in London. He left school at 14 and started working at the National Events Management Service (NEMS) a year later

It was while working at NEMS that he first entered The Beatles’ orbit, as an office boy in 1966. But it wasn’t until 1968 that he became a fully fledged roadie/gofer.

After 1970, Harrington spent 16 years as a tour manager and occasional stage manager, during which time he worked for Motörhead, Derek And The Dominos, Ted Nugent and others. He married in 1976.
