Harry Styles’ new single, As It Was, just dropped and fans have already begun their theories, with some believing it’s about his dad, Desmond.

Harry Styles’ highly-anticipated single, As It Was, dropped on 1 April 2022. The singer has had a busy couple of years; from his 2019 album – Fine Line – to appearing in The Eternals and filming for Olivia Wilde’s thriller, Don’t Worry Darling, and even dropping his beauty line, Pleasing, Styles is at the peak of his career.

A synth-pop track, As It Was opens with the voice of his goddaughter, Ruby Winston, and eventually sees the singer stripping into red boxers that has viewers fangirling.

Aside from the eye-catching video, fans have been theorising the meanings of the song, with some believing it’s describing a failing romance, as well as his relationship with his father.

Check out the lyrics for As It Was

It’s not obvious that the Adore Me singer could be referencing his family life, until verse 2:

Answer the phone
“Harry, you’re no good alone
Why are you sitting at home on the floor?
What kind of pills are you on?”
Ringin’ the bell
And nobody’s coming to help
Your daddy lives by himself
He just wants to know that you’re well, oh-oh-oh

One fan theorises that the first part of the conversation is between him and his father, who’s asking him what he’s doing and why.

With this in mind, “Ringin’ the bell, And nobody’s coming to help” could be the singer venting to his friends about the call, who in response tells him to give his father a break because “Your daddy lives by himself, he just wants to know that you’re well.”

Another believes the lyrics “I don’t wanna talk about the way that it was, Leave America, two kids follow her” is in reference to his parent’s divorce, and the two kids are Harry and his sister, Gemma, who lived with their mother. However, there’s no information to prove that his father actually resided in the US.

Who is Harry Styles’ dad, Desmond?

The 28-year-old singer was born to Anne Twist (née Selley) and Desmond Styles in Redditch, Worcestershire.

Desmond and Anne divorced when Harry was seven years old and Selley went on to marry John Cox. Selley and Cox eventually split and the former married her late husband, Robin Twist, in 2013.

Reportedly born on 25 October 1957, Des Styles is 65 years old in 2022. He previously worked in finance for several companies, including HFC Bank and The Funding Corporation, before transitioning into business. He has been director of Consult HS Limited since January 2014.

Although he’s no longer married to Harry’s mother, he still maintains contact with his pop star son; his Twitter profile pictures shows the father and son vacationing on a boat.

He’s been with his son every step of the way as he shot to stardom. In 2012, Styles revealed he spent a few days touring with One Direction and was overwhelmed by the number of fans. However, as he’s now a global star, the 65-year-old rarely gets to see his son, but claims he’s just a text away: “I’m just very proud to be his dad but I don’t want to exploit that either, I just want to be here if he needs me.”

Des has also been spotted at Harry’s concerts before:
