Maneskin’s singer Damiano David offered the sage advice “have fun and don’t get too close to the table” at this year’s Eurovision, but the comment has gone over some viewers’ heads.
Italian glam rock band Maneskin returned to Eurovision one year after they took home the crown. This year saw Italy’s act, Mahmood & Blanco, place sixth with their song Brividi.
While Mahmood & Blanco failed to find the same success as their predecessors, they didn’t attract as many screaming headlines either. Here’s what Maneskin’s joke about last year’s Eurovision controversy really meant.
Damiano David says ‘don’t get too close to the table’
Maneskin returned to Eurovision on 14 May 2022 for a performance after their win last summer. Speaking to co-host Alessandro Cattelan onstage, the group had some advice to offer this year’s participants.
Damiano David, the group’s lead singer, offered two pieces of advice:
“Have fun and don’t get too close to the table guys. Don’t do it.”
The comment saw the crowd react with cheers and Alessandro Cattelan break into laughter. But for those unaware of what Damiano David was joking about, the comment may have gone over their head.

Damiano’s joke has its meaning in previous Eurovision controversy
Although Maneskin’s win at Eurovision should be the only talking point from last year’s competition, the rock band were swamped with controversy after they were accused of taking drugs on-air.
During last year’s live broadcast, Damiano David was spotted leaning towards the table during one part, leading to accusations the singer was taking cocaine. David strenuously denied taking drugs at the event. Speaking at a press conference after Eurovision 2021, Damiano David explained: “Thomas broke a glass… I don’t use drugs.”
But Damiano David shows he knows how to make light of the situation with his “don’t get too close to the table” joke. We’re sure all future Eurovision artists will heed Damiano’s advice!

Controversy cleared up
Damiano David certainly could make light of the controversy as Maneskin were cleared of all accusations the group had been involved in illicit activities.
After their win last summer, Maneskin further denied the rumours in a statement on Instagram. As reported by the Independent, the band’s statement revealed Damiano David was picking up a glass dropped on the floor by his bandmate, Thomas Raggi.
An inquiry followed that found Maneskin did not take drugs during the Eurovision 2021 final. The band underwent a voluntary drug test, which was negative.
