Why is the Princess Diana movie called Spencer? Trailer sparks interest

The trailer for the new Princess Diana movie, Spencer, was released yesterday, Thursday, 26 August. Following the trailer’s premiere, some are curious to know why the movie is called Spencer. We explore the meaning behind the title of the highly anticipated Lady Di film.

Why is the movie called Spencer?

The film’s title, Spencer, references the late Princess of Wales’ maiden name. Pablo Larraín, the film’s director has previously opened up on the meaning behind the title in an interview with Deadline.

At the time he admitted the use of her maiden name was intentional as he chose to feature her family name as the film explores the royal finding herself.

He explained to the publication: “It’s about finding herself, about understanding that possibly the most important thing for her is to be well, and to be with herself and by herself.

“That’s why the movie is called Spencer, which is the family name she had before she met Charles.”
