What is The Emerald Tablet in Eternals
The Emerald Tablet is an ancient artefact and was a tablet made of emerald which could be written on with a stylus.
The Whitman poem was recited by Whitman and was one of the first of many hints about the Celestials. When Makkari mentions The Emerald Tablet, he is likely referring to The Emerald Tablet of Hermes which is an ancient text that was likely first written around 750 CE and contains a lot of the period’s alchemical practices. In the text, it is suggested that gold can be made artificially and there is a way to create a Philosopher’s Stone.
Druig gave Makkari the Emerald Tablet before the Eternals parted ways, and that could be why he teased her about still having it when they saw each other again. It is certain that the Emerald Tablet holds some sort of significance and it could even be opened up wider to future Marvel films. It is possible that throughout the phase four films we are collecting different artefacts along the way.
The ancient Emerland Tablet transcription
Here is a translation of The Emerald Tablet from an ancient Arabic transcription by Jabir ibn Hayyan. This translation is into English and done by Eric J. Holmyard:
Truth! Certainty! That in which there is no doubt!
That which is above is from that which is below, and that which is below is from that which is above,
working the miracles of one [thing]. As all things were from One.
Its father is the Sun and its mother the Moon.
The Earth carried it in her belly, and the Wind nourished it in her belly,
as Earth which shall become Fire.
Feed the Earth from that which is subtle,
with the greatest power. It ascends from the earth to the heaven
and becomes ruler over that which is above and that which is below.
What does the Emerald Tablet contain?
The tablet contained texts that Makkari wanted to know.
Whilst residing in Babylon, Makkari wanted to find the Emerald Tablet. In hopes of doing this, she configured a deal with two traders to trade for it. Therefore, she collected as many artefacts as she could but when it came to the handover, the traders did not have the tablet. They attempted to taking the artefacts from her anyway but Makkari caught them and the traders told her the tablet was a myth.
After the incident involving the two traders, she set off on the venture of searching for the tablet. When she eventually found the Emerald Tablet, she brought it back with her to the Domo. Where she added it to her collection of the other historical objects that she had accumulated.
