Velma’s lesbian crush in latest Scooby-Doo release goes viral

New release Trick Or Treat Scooby-Doo introduces fans to new character, clothing designer Coco Diablo who is head of costume for a crime syndicate that has produced attire for some of the Mystery Inc’s most iconic villains.

In the movie, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo track Coco down and lock her and her kitty in prison. But, after doppelgänger ghosts of some of the crew’s past foes start haunting the team, Coco becomes an unlikely partner to the gang.

Velma is seen to crush on Coco hard throughout the film, with the clip of the pair’s first meeting having made its rounds online. In the scene that has been shared across Twitter, Velma, walks in front of her Mystery Inc pals Fred and Daphne as she offers Coco some Scooby Snacks.

However, once Velma’s eyes meet Coco’s romantic music is heard, and audiences see Coco from Velma’s perspective as she appears in slow motion and has annotations pop up beside her, reading “amazing turtleneck” and “incredible glasses.” In the next shot of Velma, her cheeks are seen to quickly blush, leading her glasses to steam up as she exclaims: “Jinkies.”

Another scene from the movie that has also been shared among fans online that sees Daphne and Velma have a one-to-one where Velma admits she’s “crushing big time” over Coco.

Fans describe Velma as ‘canonically’ lesbian amid new release

As Scooby-Doo fans watch the new Halloween film release, many fans have taken to social media as they have shared their appreciation for Velma’s character representation.

In some posts, users have gone on to describe Velma as ‘canon‘ or ‘canon lesbian‘. As explained by Medium, which explains the term within the discourse of anime, ‘canon’ can refer to characters vocalizing their sexuality, romantic interest, or showing physical affection.

In the context of how Velma is represented in Trick Or Treat Scooby-Doo, she is seen to both express her feelings for Coco as she blushes when she first meets her and later when she confides in Daphne about her crush.

While sharing the scene when Velma meets Coco, one fan wrote on Twitter: “Canon lesbian Velma, I have been waiting for you.” Another echoed: “They made Velma canonically lesbian in the Scooby-Doo movies.”

It’s not the first time Velma’s sexuality has been hinted at in the franchise

Velma’s sexuality has been a long-debated topic among fans of the Scooby-Doo franchise, with some having thought the character could have been bisexual or even pansexual.

As fans have shared their excitement over Velma’s recent portrayal in Trick Or Treat Scooby-Doo, some have suggested that it is the third universe in which the character is a ‘canon lesbian.’

As per NBC News, while celebrating pride month in 2020 on Instagram, animator, and Mystery Incorporated producer Tony Cervone, confirmed Velma’s sexuality in the Mystery Inc as “gay.” He wrote: “I’ve said this before, but Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She’s gay.”

In 2020, James Gunn, who wrote the screenplay for the live-action 2002 Scooby-Doo film, tweeted that Velma was also written as “explicitly gay” in his initial script, according to Buzzfeed
