The documentary is set for a US release on 16 July 2021. It is thought that Roadrunner’s worldwide release will come later in summer.

It will have its world premiere earlier, on 11 June 2021, at the Tribeca Film Festival.

On 16 July 2021, Roadrunner will be released in cinemas around the United States. The documentary is set to air in cinemas in the UK and around the world, later in summer.


Distribution is led by Focus Features and the production companies involved with Roadrunner include CNN Films and HBO Max.

Variety reported that after its theatrical release stateside, Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain will air on CNN and the HBO Max streaming service at a later, unspecified date. HBO Max is currently only available in the United States. It is unconfirmed as of yet whether other distribution platforms – Netflix, Amazon, NOW TV, Hulu – will acquire the rights for Roadrunner. Morgan Neville is taking a posthumous look at Anthony Bourdain’s life, having started production in 2019. Bourdain died on 8 June 2018, at the age of 61.

The clips of Bourdain featured in Roadrunner are all pulled from the archive, which are supplemented with newly shot interviews. Most of the interviewees featured in Roadrunner are friends or colleagues of Bourdain’s.
