Late painter and host Bob Ross passed away in 1995, however, Zoolander star Owen Wilson is channelling the legend in an upcoming IFC feature, Paint.

Bob Ross’ show, The Joy Of Painting, taught viewers how to paint over the course of 403 episodes, he also inspired them with his profound words of wisdom.

Wilson sports a brown afro in the first released pictures and it instantly became clear that the film would pay homage to Ross. However, the film is not a biography, it tells the original story of fictional painter Carl Nargle.

Wilson has been shooting the comedy in Saratoga Springs, and after fans spotted him in character, they’ve all reacted to his transformation.

Owen Wilson channelling painter Bob Ross in upcoming movie

In the upcoming movie from writer and director Brit McAdams, Wilson plays Carl Nargle, who happens to be Vermont’s best public television painter, until a younger, better artist steals his shine.

After spending the last few decades broadcasting an art program on Vermont public access television, Nargle feels replaced by the upcoming painter. According to a synopsis from the IFC Films production via NME, Nargle “has it all” including a whole bunch of fans, his own painting van and a signature hairdo.

Although, what does he do when that all gets ripped away from him? You’ll have to wait until April 28, 2023, when it hits theatres.

Paint featured in The Blacklist

The movie has been highly-anticipated as McAdams’ script was written as far back as 2010 when it was featured in The Blacklist. Which is a film industry platform that collates the most popular un-produced screenplays from each year. The best ones are usually picked up by studios some productions that were from the same 2010 Blacklist as Paint include Looper, Jackie, and The Hunger Games.

The original Blacklist description of Paint calls Wilson’s character “a Bob Ross–esque PBS painting show host” as per Vulture. Wilson does a fantastic job of channelling this TV icon without having to revive Ross or anything he actually experienced. Let’s just say, the “signature perm” is certainly reminiscent of Ross’ curly hair do.

Who stars in Paint?

Wilson stars alongside legendary actors Stephen Root, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Michaela Watkins. It also features Legends Of Tomorrow’s Ciara Renée, Search Party’s Lusia Strus, and relative newcomer, Lucy Freyer.

Away from Paint, Wilson will return as Mobius in season 2 of Loki, his comeback was confirmed earlier this year. Most recently, you may have seen Wilson starring opposite Jennifer Lopez in the rom-com Marry Me; he plays a normal guy who wins over a famous woman in the flick.

Fans think it is ‘just Owen Wilson wearing an afro’

The movie will hit theaters April 28 2023, via IFC Films.
