Does Irish YouTuber Jacksepticeye play Qbert in Free Guy?

New Ryan Reynolds comedy caper Free Guy will (probably) come to cinemas on 11 December. The cast list includes popular YouTuber Jacksepticeye as Qbert. But is Jacksepticeye in the movie? It turns out it’s a bit more complicated than that…

Jacksepticeye as Qbert in Free Guy

Seán William McLoughlin, better known as Jacksepticeye, plays the role of Qbert in the upcoming comedy adventure film Free Guy.

He will feature alongside stars Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi (in his capacity as an actor, not director). Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Stranger Things’s Joe Keery are also prominent cast members.

However, fans probably won’t have spotted the face of Jacksepticeye in the trailer. This is because McLoughlin is cast in the capacity of voice actor. He provides the voice of Qbert, but doesn’t actually appear on screen as the character.

Free Guy depends heavily on computer generated imagery for a lot of its special effects, and evidently at least one of its characters. One such example is Jackscepticeye’s Qbert.

Who, or what, is Qbert?

For those unfamiliar with the character, Qbert (or Q*bert) is a 2D action arcade game, with puzzle elements. The game uses isometric graphics for a pseudo-3D effect.

Qbert also appeared in Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph” franchise, under license from Sony, and also appeared in “Pixels” in 2015.

Sony has owned the rights to the Qbert character since buying Columbia Pictures in 1989. Columbia Pictures owned Gottlieb – the company responsible for developing Qbert – during the period of the game’s development.

Who is YouTuber Jacksepticeye?

Seán McLoughlin, 30, is an Irish YouTuber famous for his vlogs and “Let’s Play” series of videos.

He started his YouTube career in November 2012, under the moniker “jacksepticeye”. Originally, he just posted gameplay videos. When PewDiePie mentioned him in a 2013 video, his subscriber count jumped from 2,500 to 15,000 in four days. Soon afterwards, he boasted a following of 1.5 million.

Now, his YouTube videos have garnered in excess of 13 billion views and his subscribers number over 25 million.

Besides a successful career creating video content for YouTube, McLoughlin co-created the clothing brand Cloak with fellow YouTuber Markiplier. He announced Cloak in a 2018 video. He also plays drums.
