Hulu and Disney+’s Crush accurately depicts teenage LGBTQ+ relationships and a stand-out performance comes from Rowan Blanchard who plays the character of Paige. Auli’i Cravalho also gives a stellar portrayal of AJ who is the girl Paige doesn’t think she likes but ends up kissing. Both characters are gay in the film and this has led viewers to wonder whether they are gay or bisexual in real life too.
The film focuses on lesbian teenager Paige, who starts the school track team in an attempt to win over her crush Gabriella. When Paige unexpectedly falls for Gabby’s twin sister AJ she becomes confused about who she truly loves.
The light-hearted queer romance film landed on Hulu on 29 April. It is directed by Sammi Cohen and written by Casey Rackham and Kirsten King, who are all queer. So let’s discover whether lead actor Rowan Blanchard is gay in real life too.

Is Rowan Blanchard gay in real life?
Yes, Rowan Blanchard is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and identifies as queer.
In January 2016 she shared, in a since-deleted tweet, that although she has previously been attracted to boys, she identifies as queer. Rowan wrote she doesn’t want to label herself because she is open to liking any gender.
Blanchard shared online: “I personally don’t wanna label myself as straight, gay or whatever so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with – just existing ;).” She continued: “Yes, I’m open to liking any gender in future (which) is why I identify as queer.”
Her tweets were posted shortly after she penned an insightful blog post entitled Sorry, Not Sorry. In the article, Rowan explained she “quit apologising for existing” and recounted all the times she has suppressed her emotions for the happiness of others.
The post received critical acclaim and this isn’t the only time Blanchard has been noted as an inspiration. She was also featured on the Most Influential Teens in 2015 list by Time Magazine.
Who is Rowan Blanchard?
Rowan Blanchard was born in Los Angeles on 14 October 2001 to yoga instructors Elizabeth and Mark Blanchard-Boulbol. At just five years old she landed a role in movie The Back-up Plan and has since starred in TV series such as Girl Meets World and Snowpiercer.

Crush actors open up about their sexuality
Auli’i Cravalho is the 21-year-old Hawaiian actor who stars alongside Blanchard in Crush. Cravalho first came to fame as the voice of Moana in the 2016 Disney film. Since then she has starred in Ralph Breaks The Internet and All Together Now.
Auli’i is openly bisexual and came out in April 2020. The actor was excited to play a bisexual character as it felt authentic. She was also glad her character’s sexuality didn’t define who AJ was.
