Sing 2 has taken the box office by storm as fans have rejoiced at the return of some of their favourite characters. However, many fans are wondering if Sing 2’s Clay Calloway is based on a real person. We give you all the details about this rock star recluse.
The sequel to the feel-good film Sing from 2016 sees many our our favourite faces (and voices) return, including Taron Egerton, Matthew McConaughey and Scarlett Johannson.
The film also brings us a fantastic new soundtrack including covers of hits by The Weeknd, Coldplay and Shawn Mendes.
What is Sing 2 about?
The plot of Sing 2 picks up right where we left off from the first film. The determined Buster Moon and his group of singers are trying to put on a show in Redshore City to impress a big entertainment and music producer. However, they promise that they can get reclusive rock star Clay Calloway to perform with them, even though they’ve never met him!
All our favourites have returned including Reese Witherspoon, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll and many more. We also get some new voices to add to the mix including Bobby Cannavale, Pharrell, Halsey and Letitia Wright.

Is Clay Calloway based on a real person?
According to IMDB Sing 2’s Clay Calloway is a tribute to real-life singer Cab Calloway. Many fans have been picking up on this reference due to the similarity of their names.
Cab Calloway was an American Jazz singer who was born on 25 December 1907 in Rochester, New York, and who died at the age of 86 in 1994.
Calloway was well known for being a regular performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, and for his eccentric dance moves. He became a large part of the swing era that mixed jazz and vaudeville together.
You could often find him scatting, and at the front of some of the most popular dance bands of the 30s and 40s. He was also the first African American musician to sell a million records from one song.
However, the style of singing from Cab Calloway to Clay Calloway is quite different. Clay Calloway from Sing 2 is voiced by none other than U2 legend Bono!
One of the standout moments of the second film is the duet between Scarlett Johansson’s Ash and Bono’s Cab as they sing the U2 classic I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.
