There are some movies you head out to see and can’t help but take them home with you…
By this, we mean you get into the car, on the bus or begin to walk home from the cinema and you simply can’t stop thinking about them. Often it’s the sign of a great one, but when it comes to musicals, it’s a different experience.
The songs invade your head and you find yourself humming along, sometimes even without realising.
There are lots of great musicals that have had this effect on audiences and it’s clear the latest to earn this honour is Dear Evan Hansen.
Directed by Stephen Chbosky, this American movie is based on the 2015 musical of the same name and stars the likes of Amy Adams (Arrival), Julianne Moore (Magnolia), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), and more.
Ben Platt returns to reprise the titular role he originated on Broadway and, as expected, much of the media spotlight has centred on him since the film’s release.
Audiences are keen to get to know him after being impressed by his performance, and one question to have been raised is this: Is Ben Platt gay?

Is Ben Platt gay?
Yes. Ben Platt is openly gay and has been for many years.
While talking about his debut album – Sing To Me Instead – Ben revealed to PEOPLE he has been “out” since he was 12 years old:
“If I was going to write about people I loved, I wasn’t going to pretend they weren’t men just because I hadn’t talked about that before. I’ve been out since I was 12 years old to my family and anyone in my life.”
He added: “I’ve never sort of hidden that or been ashamed by it. It’s just part of me.”
The music video for Ease My Mind features Charlie Carver as Ben’s love interest. Opening up about the video, the 28-year-old actor and singer explained: “There wasn’t really any moment where we had to decide it should be about me and a man…
“It was just, ‘We’re going to represent what this was inspired by,’ which was this man I was in love with.”

Who is Ben Platt dating?
In November 2020, Ben took to his Instagram to celebrate an anniversary milestone with his followers. He had been dating Noah Galvin for almost a year and he captioned the post “10 gay-ass months”.
The couple announced they had gone official earlier that May and are still together to this day.
For those unfamiliar with Noah’s career, you may find it pretty interesting to know he actually portrayed Evan Hansen on Broadway, while Ben was the first to portray the character.
Noah is 27 and is arguably best known for starring as Kenny O’Neal in ABC sitcom The Real O’Neals.
‘He was the guy’
In June this year, Ben shared some insight into the origins of the relationship with Noah while appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show:
“We’ve been together a year-and-a-half now. We were friends for five years and right before the pandemic, we finally decided to really give it a shot. We kind of skated around it for a long time.”
Kelly argued the two actors’ love story would make “a movie in and of itself”. However, Ben joked Noah would probably have to disagree on that one.
Speaking to the host, Ben admits he “was pretty dumb about it” because he “didn’t see the light for a long time”. On the other hand, he heartily admitted: “Then I realised, you know, that he was the guy.”
Dear Evan Hansen is screening in cinemas from Friday, 24 September 2021.
