How is Dickie Moltisanti related to Tony?
In the film, Dickie aka Alessandro Nivola is referred to as Tony’s uncle. This is because Tony idolises Dickie, thus Tony calls him his uncle even though he is not Dickie’s nephew.
Calling people aunt or uncle can be a form of endearment even if they are not blood-related. Just like how Tony refers to Christopher as his “nephew”, even though he is a cousin once removed of Tony’s wife Carmela.
However, towards the end of the film, Dickie is murdered by an assassin ordered by Junior Soprano aka Corey Stoll.
In the final scene, Sally encourages Dickie to leave Tony alone and give him space. Silvio then persuades Dickie to sort things out with Tony but before this happens he is shot in the head by an assassin.
Tony attends the wake and The Sopranos theme plays as he stares into the coffin, followed by the credits.

Sopranos family tree explored
Dickie Moltisanti is Christopher’s father and he is the first cousin of Carmela Soprano, whose last name before marriage was DeAngelis.
This means that Christopher is only a cousin to Tony through marriage. Even though Tony is very close to Dickie and he acted like a father figure to Christopher, playing a massive role in their lives.
Christopher’s mum, Joanne, is from the Blundetto family and her brother, Al, is Tony Blundetto’s father. This means that Tony Blundetto and Christopher are first cousins.
Tony Blundetto and Tony Soprano are also first cousins because Blundetto’s mum is the sister of Tony Soprano’s mum.
However, Christopher and Tony Soprano still aren’t related to one another directly.
The Many Saints Of Newark plot
Set during the sixties and seventies, around thirty years before the events of The Sopranos, The Many Saints of Newark is the prequel everyone wanted.
The film follows a young Anthony Soprano who is growing up in a hectic time in Newark, New Jersey. Rival gangsters are beginning to challenge the DiMeo family and the situation is getting very tense.
Dickie Moltisanti is the ‘uncle’ he idolises and with Dickie’s influence Tony becomes the powerful boss of his own mob. The film is a must-watch, especially if you want to know how Vito Corleone aka Robert De Niro became the Godfather.
