Affleck is a die-hard Red Sox fan so it’s perhaps no surprise he halted production of Gone Girl when David Fincher famously tried to make him wear a Yankees cap.

Gone Girl was released in 2014 and remains a critically acclaimed masterpiece starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. The psychological thriller film was directed by David Fincher and written by Gillian Flynn, based on her 2012 novel of the same name.

Let’s take a look at why Ben Affleck refused to wear a Yankees hat and how the ordeal stand-off down…

Gone Girl set shut down when Affleck refused to wear Yankees hat

Affleck is vigorously loyal to the Boston Red Sox and, according to The New York Times, he even refused to wear a Yankees cap during the filming of hit film Gone Girl.

Ben might have been paid a hefty sum to star in Gone Girl but no money could ever make him wear a New York Yankees hat. Director David Fincher asked him to wear the Yankees cap for a scene in the film set at a New York airport. Affleck’s character, Nick Dunne, is trying to keep a low profile by hiding beneath a baseball cap and it made sense for it to be a Yankees one. However, Affleck refused, causing production to shut down for four days.

Ben described the stand-off to The New York Times in 2014: “I said, ‘David, I love you, I would do anything for you but I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it.’ And I couldn’t put it on my head.”

Fincher insisted Affleck had to wear the hat but Affleck recalls he “rioted, it was a one-man riot against the Yankees.” Ben also told The Times the hat was the only disagreement he had with Fincher, suggesting the rest of the time on set was a breeze.

Filming halted for four days due to baseball cap

Ben stuck to his Boston roots and Fincher revealed in his director’s commentary on the Gone Girl DVD it took them four days to reach an agreement.

“I really wanted it to be a Yankees cap but, being from Boston and not being very professional as an actor, Ben refused to wear a Yankees cap,” Fincher jested. “I mean it did not come to blows but we had to shut down production for four days.”

In the end, they settled on his character wearing a Mets hat.

It must be noted, for the rest of the director’s commentary Fincher showers Affleck with praise for his outstanding portrayal of Nick Dunne. Fincher and Affleck are good friends and recently had a virtual reunion for Variety‘s Directors on Directors conversation series.
