Does Sidney die in Scream 5 as America’s favourite slasher returns?

Scream 5, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, rolled out in cinemas today (14 January, 2022) – its red carpet premiere was… “slashed”, due to the rise of the Omicron variant of covid-19. Multiple theories circulated in the months leading up to its release regarding the life and/or death of the series’ main heroine and protagonist, Sidney Prescott. So, does Sidney die in Scream 5?

Who made what predictions regarding the death of Sidney Prescott in Scream 5?

Some franchises seem to lend themselves well to predictions – Scream is one of those.

Going back as far as July 2021, various outlets have been pontificating and theorising, or compiling lists of others’ theories, about whether or not Sidney Prescott would die in Scream 5.

Film School Rejects listed its favourite five fan theories. First was that Sidney would die in the movie’s opening.

“Some people are excited about the idea of such a shake-up” – but not everyone. Another prominent theory was that Sidney would in fact turn out to be Scream 5’s killer.

“With Scream’s track record,” FSR reminded its readers, “anyone could be the killer”.

Elsewhere, predictions popped up in Metro, Showbiz Cheatsheet, and on Medium. Prominent among them were the idea that Sidney would die at some point during the movie. But does she?

Does Sidney die in Scream 5?

Scream 5 features what Hidden Remote have called the “most heartbreaking death in the entire franchise”.

Among those who lose their lives in the fifth instalment of the slasher series are: Wes (played by Dylan Minnette), Deputy Judy (Marley Shelton), Liv (Sonia Ben Ammar), and… Dewey (David Arquette).

But Sidney does not die. She and Gale (Courteney Cox) take down Amber (Mikey Madison), who falls onto a stovetop and catches fire.

In fact, one of the film’s “most impressive accomplishments”, writes IGN, is that it “presents a future where Sidney Prescott doesn’t have to be involved”.

Which could mean that the franchise’s producers are setting themselves up to make a Scream movie without Sidney in it.

Who plays Sidney Prescott in the Scream movies?

Neve Campbell has played Sidney Prescott in all five Scream movies to date. The first, which has the name as the fifth – simply Scream – came out in 1996.

Scream 2 followed in 1997; three years later, Scream 3 came out. Then, after an 11-year hiatus, Scream 4 was released – the action takes place 10 years after the previous film. Scream 4 won a Golden Trailer Award for Best Horror Poster.

Will Scream (5) be the last time Sidney Prescott picks up the phone?
